Da in Deutschland wörtliche Zitate leider der Vergangenheit angehören, muss ich wohl in die Tasten hauen um mein Geltungsbedürfnis zu beweisen. Leider haben es TV/Medien etc. mittlerweile nämlich geschafft, dass nur noch das geschriebene Wort etwas Wert hat - wenn überhaupt.

Im Folgenden kommen ein paar zufällige Thesen die ic in den Raum stelle, da ich sie für interessant halte, da sie mich auf meiner persönlichen Entwicklung voranbringen. Ich schreibe mir einfach von der Seele was mir so auf dem Herzen liegt, dass das natürlich nicht der "Weg des geringsten Wiederstandes" sein wird, ist mir klar. Ich erwarte auch keine "Ja ich stimme dir zu" sondern eher Widerspruch, bzw. eigene Kommentare. Denn das ist auch mein Ziel: Andere Meinungen zu hören um darüber zu diskutieren, denn Widerstand ist immer konstruktiv.
Darunter fallen Begriffe, aber auch einfach ein vielleicht wirr erscheinende Aneinanderreihung von Behauptungen ;) Merke: Die Philosophie, bzw. der Konsruktivismus denkt nicht in Schwarz weiss / wahr - falsch Begrifflichkeiten, sondern hinterfragt ALLES, sogar sich selbst...

1. Involviert in der Materie-Syndrom
Eine gern gehörte Behauptung ist: "Wenn man keine Ahnung hat, soll man einfach mal die Schnauze halten." Wer dies sagt, will zeigen, dass man etwas mit der Materie zu tun haben MUSS, um mitreden zu können. Meiner Meinung nach ist dies der falsche Weg, denn es gibt auch sowas wie "Betriebsblindheit", die besagt, dass man eben nicht zu sehr involviert sein soll, um über etwas zu urteilen. Ausserdem entstehen die besten Liebeslieder ja auch nicht von Verliebten, sondern von Leuten, die Emotionen zu Geld machen sollen ;) oder einfach nur talentiert sind, etwas gut auszudrücken.

2.Rat-Race-Syndrom
Dieser australisch-englische Begriff besagt, dass alle nur von A nach B rennen, meistens aufgrund des Jobs oder Geld oder sonstigen Belanglosigkeiten. Ich stimme dem zu, wenn ich bspw. auf der Autobahn fahre, frage ich mich immer: Wo wollen die denn alle hin ;) Aber da das Gras ja immer grüner ist, auf der anderen Seite des Flusses, ist dies auch verständlich. Wieso sonst erforschen wir erst Planeten, bevor wir uns für die moderne menschliche Psyche interessieren!? Dadurch lässt sich auch Fernweh erklären.

3.Freiheit in Fesseln
Wieso brauchen wir immer Zwänge um uns zu motivieren? Peter Sloterdijk, ein deutscher Philosoph (zu empfehlen) ist für die Abschaffung des Steuersystems. Mit kontroversen Argumenten untermauert er seine Aussagen. Unser System legt uns also Fesseln an, die wir Freiheit nennen, wir wollen quasi in der Opferrolle sein, in der Sklavenrolle, wir wollen diese Gesetze, da wir NICHT darauf vertrauen, dass es auch auf freiwilliger Basis funktionieren würde. Somit sieht unsere Gesellschaft im Menschen laut Sloterdijk "das gierige Tier" dass nur etwas macht, wenn es gezwungen wird.

4. Intrinsische Motivation
Besonders in Verbindung mit Punkt 3 wird deutlich, wie stark wir verlernt haben, auf UNS zu hören. Unser Sytem (Medien/Geld&Steuern) gibt derartig viele EXTERN Impulse und Signale, dass es uns oft schwer fällt wirklich zu wissen was wir wollen! Uns wird zwar diktiert was wir zu wollen haben, jedoch ist dies häufig mit der Geldmaschinerie in Verbindung zu bringen. Dinge die kein Geld bringen, haben wir nicht zu TUN ..nicht zu DENKEN, ..nicht zu MACHEN.. dazu gehört beispielsweise, die Philosophie. Sie ist gefährlich, denn sie stellt genau solche DInge in Frage. Ich mache sie trotzdem ;)
Ein greifbares weiteres Beispiel ist der Hochleistungssport. Eine Ausnahme sozusagen, denn dort machen Menschen unglaubliche Dinge, investieren sogar Zeit und Geld, bringen körperliche & geistige Opfer... um nur ein Stück weiterzukommen. Und sie verdienen noch nicht mal viel dabei!! (NUr die Top3 vielleicht) Sie machen es trotz extremen Druck und Schwierigkeit einfach aus innerer Überzeugung, aus intrinsciher Motivation. Der englische Begriff "DEDICATION" ist absolut passend.

5. Neid & Angst
Zwei weitere wichtige Begriffe und Symptome unseres Systems. Sie können auch wiederum mit Geld-Verdienen in Verbindung gebracht werden. Denn wer neidisch ist, kauft ein neues Auto... UNd wer ANgst hat, lässt sich mit Schweinegrippe impfen.
Wir machen das sogar freiwillig (viele von uns) und haben sogar Spaß dabei alles in unserer Kleinkariertheit zu kritisieren und negativ darzustellen, so dass die Leute und Kinder am Ende verunsichert sind und Angst haben. Neid ist die Folge und Ursache für dieses Verhalten.

6. Selbstoffenbarung
Dieser Befriff knüpft auch auf vorherigem Beispiel an. Denn was sagt es über eine Gesellschaft aus, die an allem versucht etwas schlechtes zu finden? Sie ist schlecht! Wer alles scheisse findet ist ja auch eher "scheisse" als optimistisch oder? Wieso kann man nicht mal etwas neutral in den Raum stellen? Wer gerade denkt, dass ich selbst hier kritisch schreibe ... Hat mich 1. falsch verstanden, da ich bereits eingangs erwähnte dass ich diese Thesen als Diskussionstoff in den Raum stelle und 2. Sagt bestätigt ein derartige Gedanke meine Aussage, nämlich dass IHN/SIE wieder versucht etewas schlechtes rauszuziehen.. entweder aus beruhigendem Neid (ich weiss es doch besser) oder aus Angst ("ich lass diese fremden Gedanken nicht meine innere Harmonie stören" -> Selbstschutz). Dies ist ein Beispiel wie man auf dem Selbstoffenbarungsohr interpretiert, nach dem Motto "Was sagt dass über die Person aus, die dies und das sagt?" (In Anlehnung an das 4 Nachrichten einer Botschaft-Modell von Schulz von Thun - Wens interessiert)

Abschließend ist zu sagen dass diese Punkte überschneidungen haben. Bspw. das System der externen Zwänge zerstört unsere intrinsiche Motivation.

Mein Apell: Nehmt alles an, hört es euch an, aber entscheidet aufgrund eurer eigenen Stimme. Lasst euch nicht mehr fremdsteuern.

Hi!

Later this day I'll be leaving Kuala Lumpur for Germany! It is really sad to leave Asia now, but I think I've seen more than enough beautiful things and had a lot of fun and new experiences.

I dont have the feeling I missed out on something - It was rather like living for real - meeting nice people along the way and learning many new things.

At the moment I am trying to sort my pictures, making the next video, which is about the Philippines and preparing menthally to enter the plane in a couple of hours to get another culture shock back home, which will hopefully be not so bad - Of course I am also looking forwardmto see my family, relatives and friends again.

Alright then, just keep on following this blog for the following days or weeks to get to see the next video and information about my well-being back home.

Ich habe in meinem Asien Jahr viel schoenes gesehn, wie ihr wahrscheinlich auch verfolgt habt.

Jetzt bin leider wieder schockiert, da es doch noch Plaetze und Momente gibt, die nochmal alles uebertreffen.

Alles negative verschwindet, die Dinge die mir vorher gefehlt haben, sind da. Dinge die vorher das Bild truebten werden an diesem Ort ersetzt durch das Gegenteil.

Mir fehlen die Worte - Alles scheint perfekt zu sein...

Indonesia part 2 - A new beginning...

For half a year, whilst living in Malaysia, I was constantly homesick... I couldnt forget the time I enjoyed in Indonesia before. All the time I had to recap and make plans to get another dose of my own highly addicted paradise.

The people were, again, mostly extremely friendly...
The nature is just out of this world in some places...
The food and the prices are mostly outstanding...
The time I had spent there, again, touched my soul like no other
The whole atmosphere is just magical! I love this country and the whole feeling I have there so much that I easily forget about all the downsides this country holds:

For example:

- Some attempts from male locals to rip you off / steal / cheat (though this is now increasingly easy for me to figure out and all I do is smile and talk to them and they will stop trying to consider me a tourist)

- the pollution

I think these downsides can all be traced back to the same root of the problem, which is:

- poverty and bad education which is due to corruption or difficulties for officials to govern a country this diverse

Still the sunny sides of Indonesia and its beautiful nature and friendly people are so intense it makes me hug the world - I am this happy!!

Ok enough enthusiastic nonsense, as you might call my lines :) Anyways enjoy these pictures... for me they are worth far more than gold itself, because they stand for memories so beautiful it almost makes me cry...

If my words and pictures just make you think about Indonesia for a second and forget all the rumours and bad stuff you might have heard of this country before, my goal is already achieved...

This is all I can wish for: TO INSPIRE YOU

Wie bereits in den Travel Plans erwaehnt, bin ich nun in den Philippinen angekommen. In HongKong erlebte ich einen Tiefpunkt in meinem ganzen Jahr Asien. Spaeter mehr dazu. Im Endeffekt habe ich diesen Tiefpunkt ueberstanden und erlebte mit Macau nochmal eine super Zeit. Von Macau war ich sehr positiv ueberrascht. Ueber Manila ging es nach Cebu. Mein erster Eindruck von den Philippinen ist: Alles ist anders. So wie es bereits vorher gelesen hab. Trotzdem schockiert mich hier nochmal vieles. Die Kinderarmut, die Leute und die weissen Auslaender mit den jungen Philipinas im Arm...

Eine Woche in dieser mega Stadt! Der absolute Wahnsinn diese Stadt!!! So wunderschoen! Mir fehlen die Worte! Da hat Mensch einmal positiv die Natur veraendert! Ok zumindest als Reisender ist diese Stadt ein Genuss... Fuer den Geldbeutel allerdings nicht! Teurer als Deutschland... Natuerlich ein Schock wenn man gerade aus Indonesien ankommt.

Auf einmal bezahlt man fuer ein Fruehstueck mehr als fuer ein Hotel mit All-Inclusive in Suedostasien...

Tradition und Moderne knallt hier wieder aufeinander. Wenn man mit dem Roller durch Reisterassen vorbei an super schoenen Hauesern faehrt atmet man leider Abgase ein, die in Indonesien einfach schrecklich riechen, da das Oel nicht richtig gefiltert wird...

Hi!

Bin nach einigen Wochen wieder zurueck in Sulawesi! Maluku ist, wie erwartet, meine neues Lieblingsreiseziel. Leider gibt einem die indonesische Regierung nur 1 Monat Zeit, standardmaessig fuer dieses atemberaubende Abenteuerland. Von daher konnte ich gerade an der Oberflaeche kratzen, da es hier transportationstechnisch nicht wie ein schweizer Uhrwerk laueft...

Die Insel Saparua erklaere ich vorlaeufig zu meinem neuen Favoriten. Atemberaubend. Mehr dazu spaeter.

The NEXT BIG Adventure !!!

Mein Praktikum ist vorbei. Nach den Cameron Highlands bin ich jetzt direkt wieder nach Indonesien geflogen. Genauer gesagt bin ich gerade in Makassar, Sulawesi. Habe wieder mal super nette Leute kennengelernt. Diesmal eine Familie aus Holland. Ich kann es kaum glauben, aber sie haben mir Malaria Tabletten geschenkt!! Wie genial ist das denn!! Normalerweise wollte ich diese (teuren !) Tabletten heute im Krankenhaus oder in der Apotheke kaufen.

Diese Arznei braucht man, wenn man im Osten von Indonesien rumreist.

Mein Ticket Richtung Osten habe ich auch eben gekauft...

An einem Wochenende mietete ich zusammen mit einigen Praktikanten ein Auto um in das Herz von Malaysia zu fahren. Wir wollten die Orang Asli sehn. Dies sind die Ureinwohner Malaysias, mit denen ich mich unterhalten habe.
Es war unheimlich schoen, traurig und komisch zugleich. Obwohl ich mich staendig, hoeflich mit ihnen unterhalten habe fuehlte ich mich nicht willkommen, weswegen wir frueher abreisten. Mit der Nacht ums Lagerfeuer wurde es also nichts..

Der Dschungel und die Leute waren trotzdem umwerfend. Impressionen gibt es spaeter.

Mein letzter Trip in Malaysia. Ich habe die Tage mit 2 Franzoesischen Maedels die Gegend erkundet. Wir trampten / hitch-hikten durch die Berge. Wir haben so gut wie nichts bezahlt und viele freundliche Leute kennengelernt. Ich habe mich mit den Arbeitern auf den Tee-Plantagen unterhalten auf Bahasa Malaysia (wie die Sprache nunmal heisst)

Es war so schoen und hat so viel Spass gemacht, dass es mir einmal mehr super-schwer fiel diesen wunderbaren Ort zu verlassen!

Am Arbeitsplatz sitzend... ... träume ich von Durchgängen...

....blauen, stinkigen Bussen voller Frauen... ..kalten Beton-Bunkern, die unter der Sonne brutzeln..

...Autobahnen, die es zu überqueren gilt... ...Schlangen-Tempeln und der Sonne...

...Fress-Tempeln unter immer-grünen Bäumen.... ....Hindu-Tempeln, die gerade gebaut werden...

...Allerlei Essen... ...und Leuten die es zubereiten..

...lächelnden Kindern & allerhand Tieren... ....Bananen-Palmen....

Deshalb wuerde es wenig Sinn machen, zu versuchen euch die gesamte Bandbreite an Geschmaeckern vorzufuehren. Es gibt schlichtweg viel zu viel hier.

Deswegen berichte ich nun ueber meinen Hauskoch, sozusagen, das 'Restaurant', zu dem ich am oeftesten gehe. Dies liegt daran, dass es verdammt nahe an meiner Wohnung liegt, es ist billig und das wichtigste: Es ist verdammt gut. Sehr lecker. Eine Kombination, der ich fast taeglich zum Opfer falle. Zusaetzlich kann man dort ins Internet, dank WiFi Netz.

Von daher verschlaegt es jeden einzelnen Tag mindestens ein Trainee (Praktikant) dorthin. Meistens mehrere und meistens bin ich mit von der Partie. Naja zumindest verdiene ich mir mein Essen, denn ich gehe dorthin meistens nach dem Fitness-Studio oder nach einer genuesslichen Runde Schwimmen im hauseigenen Pool. Manchmal aber auch, fuehrt mich der Weg direkt von der Arbeit dorthin. Dann schaue ich immerzu auf folgendes zurueck: 10 Stunden Klimaanlage und Nach-Hause-Weg, der gekennzeichnet ist von: SCHWITZEN und ABGASEN (typisch Industriegebiet)

Alles hat einen Namen. Fast alles. Die Essenz einer Sprache also.

Wie entsteht ein Name, eine Benennung eine Bezeichnug von irgendetwas? Wer nimmt sich heraus irgendetwas zu benennen, es dann in den Umlauf zu bringen, bis es dann letztendlich im allgemeinen Wortschatz landet? Dann wiederum gibt es Leute, die es sich herausnehmen, Dinge anhand ihres Namens zu verbieten! Ein absolut absurder Kreislauf moechte man meinen.

Jemand kommt daher, sagt halt mal so, dies heisst jetzt X und dann kommt jemand andres und sagt im Namen von Y ist X jetzt verboten!?

Wie koennte man dies verhindern, dass so ein bizarres Szenario entsteht!!? Die einzige Moeglichkeit waere Dinge erst gar nicht zu benennen, sie also namenslos zu belassen. Nur dann koennen sich es gewisse Leute nicht herausnehmen, ueber Koepfe hinweg zu entscheiden.

Falls dieser Sachverhalt unklar ist, werde ich ihn im Folgenden anhand eines, erst kuerzlich geschehenen Beispieles verdeutlichen.

Wo ich lebe ist Islam die offizielle Religion, deshalb schneide ich dieses brisante Thema ueberhaupt erst an. Ich werde objektiv erklaeren, da ich weiss wie sensibel viele auf dieses Thema reagieren. V.a. wenn man noch so wenig Ahnung darueber hat wie ich. Wie kann ich es mir eigentlich rausnehmen ueber den Islam zu schreiben, ich praktiziere ihn ja noch nicht mal? Versteht mich nicht falsch, ich ordne mich hier unter und mir gefaellt vieles im Islam, wobei ich den Koran (Quran) erst lesen sollte. Trotz alledem erlaube ich es mir einige Zeilen zu schreiben. Ich bin sicher nicht der einzige auf der Welt, der ueber Dinge schreibt, von denen er vll keine Ahnung hat. Bloss, gibt es da draussen wahrscheinlich niemand, der so ehrlich ist wie ich?!...

Jedenfalls dekalieren Islamisten Yoga nun haraam, dies passiert momentan in Malaysia.

"Haraam" ist arabisch und bedeutet "verboten", Muslime sollen demnach laut islamischem Gesetz nicht mit solchen Dingen in Beruehrung kommen. Bsp. Hierfuer waeren Schweinefleisch oder Alkohol. Das Gegenstueck heisst halaal, also erlaubt.

Diese beiden Worte sind sehr wichtig und nuetzlich, sogar fuer mich. Da ich inzwischen nahezu vegetarisch lebe hilft mir bspw. Das Wort halal dabei Essen zu kaufen. Somit frage ich bei dem Chinesen um die Ecke, ob dieses Essen halal ist. Dadurch vermeide ich also Dinge die haram sind: Spuren von Schweinefleisch bspw.

Ist Yoga nun also haram oder halal!?

Yoga ist die Benennung eines Bewegungsablaufes, den man auch Sport bezeichnen koennte. Der spirituelle, evtl. Hindu oder Buddha-Faktor sei fuer den Moment dahingestellt.

Muslime beten bekanntlicherweise 5 mal am Tag nach Mekka. Dies ist eine der Sauelen des Islam, ist also sehr wichtig. Beten ist auch ein Bewegungsablauf, man koennte es also auch Sport bezeichnen. Wo die Gedanken, der Geist beim Beten sind lassen wir ebenfalls mal aussen vor.

Ziehen wir also eine Linie zwischen Bewegungsablauf und Gedanken.

Gedanken sind ein heikles Thema, denn sie sind frei. Niemand kann andere Gedanken empfangen. Jeder kann seine Gedanken mehr oder weniger in eine Richtung lenken.

Ich vermute demnach, das muslimische Gedanken beim beten bei Allah, Gott sind. Andere Religionen beten auch. Anhaenger lenken dann ihre Gedanken ebenfalls in Richtung Gott wenn sie beten. Lediglich der Name Gottes mag anders sein.

Gedanken kann also niemand sehen. Bewegungsablauefe jedoch schon.

Schnell wird klar, wie absurd es ist, gewisse Bewegungsablauefe zu verbieten! Wie kann man jemand vorschreiben der Bewegungsablauf Yoga ist verboten, also haram?

Indem man den Bewegungsablauf Yoga nennt. Haette exakt der selbe Bewegungsablauf keinen Namen, koennte man ihn ja schlecht verbieten oder? Dann waere er naemlich genau so frei wie Gedanken, niemand koennte ihn benennen. Wenn seit neustem Bewegungen verboten werden, was ist dann die naechste Stufe? Gedanken zu verbieten!? Wird wahrscheinlich auch schon gemacht, jedoch wage ich zu bezweifeln wie man etwas verbieten kann, wenn es so ungreifbar bleibt wie Luft.

Ich bin also fuer eine Welt ohne Namen, denn nur namensloses ist fuer immer frei. Ansonsten kann wieder jemand daherkommen und Dinge beim Namen verbieten.

Wie funktionieren wir?
Was wollen wir -> Prinzip: Beduerfnisse befriedigen ---> Wenn Beduerfnisse befriedigt werden entsteht Glueck. Richtig? Oder> Was ist ueberhaupt die oberste Motivation auf dem menschliches Handeln ueberhaupt erst basiert. Wenn die treibende Kraft Glueck ist, tun wir alles um sie zu erreichen. Richtig?

Leider : Falsch.

Wuerde der Augenblick wertgeschaetzt, dann entstehe Glueck.

Auf viele Beduerfnisse wurden schon seit Jahrtausend immer Befriedigungen geboten. Auch heute ist es nicht anders. Nur die Art aendert sich. Heute muss man fuer alles bezahlen und denkt, dass nur dies der einzig richtige Weg sei.

Zahlreiche Menschen bieten durch ihre Buecher seit eh und je zig Wege an, die garantiert zur Erleuchtung fuehren koennten.
Warum funktioniert es also trotz alledem noch nicht. Warum gibt es immer noch so viele Probleme und unglueckliche Menschen?
Wieso fragt keine Sau danach? Wieso interessiert es anscheinend niemanden? Wieso sind Fernsehen, Arbeit, Familie und Autos anscheinend wichtiger als alles andere?
Wieso halten die Medien diese Themen fuer weitaus unwichtiger als Talkshows, Werbung und Unterhaltung?
Wieso entfernen wir uns immer weiter von uns selbst? So weit, dass wir schon gar nicht mehr wissen wer wir sind, was wir hier machen, was der Sinn des Lebens ist, was wir ueberhaupt wollen etc.
Wollen wir auf so etwas eine Antwort, gibt es garantiert immer jemanden den man fragen kann udn der eine Antwort bietet. Klar. Wieso also sollten wir also uns selbst fragen, wenn sowieso jeder andere Mensch am besten weiss, was uns fehlt?

Die Eltern wissen was wir machen muessen.
Die Lehrer wissen was wir lernen muessen.
Die Medien wissen was uns fehlt um gluecklich zu sein.

Wieso also ueberhaupt fragen stellen?

Ich stelle sie trotzdem. Schauen wir uns also die einfache Gleichung "Problem vs Loesung" einmal an. Nach dem Motto "Wenn Beduerfnisse befriedigt werden entsteht Glueck"

Was wollen wir?

• Loesungen --> Wir wollen, dass Fragen beantwortet werden.
• Unterhaltung --> Wir wollen abgelenkt werden von unseren Problemen.
• Wahrheit --> Wir wollen sie selbst fuer uns erfahren & ans Licht bringen
• Geltung --> Wir wollen, dass alle anderen nichts verheimlichen, so dass wir unsere Erfolge unseren Staerken zuschreiben koennen
• Wertschaetzung --> Wir wollen, dass unsere Gefuehle, Gedanken und Stimmungen erhoert und verstanden werden.
• Wachstum --> Wir verlangen und streben nach etwas, dass uns just in diesem Moment fehlt
• Bereicherung --> Wir wollen unsere Ziele erreichen, sollten wir welche haben.
• Erleuchtung --> Wir wollen, das eigene, ultimative Glueck, den individuellen, sicheren Weg in die Zukunft
• Komfort --> Wir wollen Sicherheit. Nicht Probleme

Was passiert also wenn jemand eine Antwort, bzw. Eine Loesung all dessen liefert? Dann sind alle froh. Oder nicht? Es wir schnell klar, dass auf diese banale Fragen bereichts Antworten vorliegen und auch jeder Zugang hat.

Trotzdem ist das traurige Ende folgendes: Die Wahrheit interessiert keinen. Bzw. Wir verstehen sie nicht, da unser System es inzwischen geschafft hat, uns so weit hochzuzuechten, in Wahrheit jedoch: Verkuemmern lassen, dass uns die banale Loesung schon wie eine Fremsprache erscheint!

As I am currently realizing my original plans , I just set another major milestone! I booked some flights to paradise. As I told you: I am living the dream, for who wants to be requiem for a dream ??? ('Mewujukan mimpi menjadi kenyataan' is the Indonesian translation for 'to make it happen' or, to be exact: 'turning dreams into facts'. Anyways, as I told you: I booked flights to paradise according to a western mindset. I dont want to reveal all my secrets, but I will confess a little. Please see below a map of the Philippines. I highlighted its wonders on it! This way you will soon learn that this amazing country is full of treasures! I am looking oh-sooo forward to going there! I am going to take CebuPacific Airlines to Cebu City on 24 January 2009. I will island-hop the archipelago from south to north till 6 March when I have to leave Manila for KL. Have fun with the map. Im Folgenden werde ich verschiedene Formen des Reisens vorstellen um diese im Anschluss kritisch zu beäugen. Von der Kaffeefahrt bis zum "Backpacking" wird einiges durch den Kakao gezogen... Eine Prise Ironie rundet das ganze ab, damit es nicht zur Langeweile kommt! :) Viel Spaß beim lesen!

Urlaub in fernen Laendern

Fuer kurze Zeit weit zu fliegen ist schlichtweg Geldverschwendung. Die Fixkosten sind hoch und die Marketing-Gurus reiben sich die Haende. Als non-plus-ultra wird angepriesen, was am weitesten entfernt liegt. In Deutschland wimmelt es von Palmen im Schaufenster, Photoshop-Straende in Brochueren und in Asien sind verschneite Landschaften im Katalog! Auf diese Weise koennen moeglichst viele Parteien den Touristen das Geld aus der Tasche ziehen. Die Fluggesellschaften lachen sich ins Fauestchen und der Reisende ist nur im Stress. 2 Wochen Phuket, 30 Grad, 5 Sterne, 3000 Euro - 0 Probleme. In einer voellig kuenstlichen Welt angekommen, verlaesst man diese auch bald wieder. Nach 10 Stunden Flug, 300 Fotos von 3 Sonnenbraenden, 2 Straenden, 1 Hotelpool, 14 x All-Inclusive, kommt man wieder in Good Ol Germany an. Was hat man nun davon? Weniger Geld auf dem Konto und 0 dazu gelernt, da keine echte Erfahrung. Die Marketing-Industrie hat ihr Ziel erreicht! Loesung: Einfach mal laengere Zeit in fremde Gefilde gehen und dann dort Kurztripps unternehmen. Alternativ: Das eigene Land oder Nachbargebiete erkunden. Die Umwelt freut sich dann auch, wenn kein Kerosin in der Atmosphaere landet. Wer sich jedoch nicht freut sind die zig Mittelmaenner die alle vom Touristen-Kuchen abhaben wollen!

Backpacking

Sehr allgemeiner Begriff. In seiner negativen Form wird er fuer folgenden Typus angewandt: Klassischerweise reisen junge EnglaenderInnen via Thailand & Co nach Australien. Der Grund ist, dass dieser Trampelpfad sehr bekannt ist. Round-The-World Tickets sind sehr beliebt und bieten sehr oft diese Strecke an, ab London versteht sich. Es gibt auch Variationen, bspw. Inklusive Abstecher nach Bali oder bis nach Neuseeland runter. Oftmals werden andere Laender, die dazwischen liegen mit bereist (Angkor Wat & Co).

Otto-Normalverbraucher zeigt sich natuerlich beeindruckend von bunten Bildchen. Die Kamera laeuft bei der Durchreise naemlich heiss! Reiseerfahrung bekommt man dadurch vielleicht auch...

Aber mit authentischen Kulturen wird man auf diesem Trampelpfad wohl tendenziell nicht konfrontiert. Ausserdem laueft man Gefahr zu viel sehen zu wollen oder das ganze nicht mehr verarbeiten zu koennen. Fixkostentechnisch klug, da man sich relativ lange Zeit uebersee aufhaelt. Jedoch hat man bei einem sogenannten "Gap-Year" (Ein Jahr Auszeit, meistens zwischen Schule und Uni, bzw. Uni und Job.), kaum genueg Zeit in eine fremde Kultur wirklich einzutauchen. Eintauchen kann man hoechstens in Swimmingpools, Bierglaeser, Schlammparties oder Lonely Planets (Reisefuehrer).

1 Jahr mag lang klingen, aber 1 Jahr fuer 7 Laender meiner Meinung nach nicht! Wenn ich 20 Jahre in England oder Deutschland wohne und noch nicht alles gesehn habe, wieso sollte ich dann imstande sein dies in einem fremden Kontinent mit anderen Sprachen zu erreichen?

Zusaetzlich gibt es den Nachahm-Effekt. Viele machen eben ein Gap-Year, weil man es halt so macht. Dabei hinterfragen sie die Werte niemals. Sie buchen einfach zu fuenft ein Ticket und fliegen eben mal nach Bangkok - dem Epi-Zentrum des Backpacking. Was danach kommt, ist wie bereits erwaehnt: Swimmingpools, Bierglaeser, Schlammparties & Lonely Planets.

Verdummende Kurzurlaube

Ein Wochenend TUI-Paket bildet Vorurteile. Kurzurlaub heisst: "kratzen an der Oberflaeche". Der Reisende projeziert faelschlicherweise all seine eigenen individuellen Erfahrungen auf das komplette Land & Leute. Dies ist verallgemeinern par excellence.

Gruppenreisen = Mitlauefereffekt

Man trifft keine eigenen Entscheidungen. Hat den Komfort von den heimigen 4 Waenden im Reiseland, die Unterhaltung wie am Fernseher zuhause, Sauberkeit, gekuenstelte Welten, gespielte Gastfreundschaft. "Ach..Die sind ja so freundlich". Am "richtigen Leben" geht das leider ganz weit vorbei.

Bsp. Karibikkreuzfahrt.

Man haelt an abgezeaunten Straenden. Die Karibik Klischees tanzen mit Ananas in der Hand ums Feuer und es wird kubanische Musik gespielt. Zigarren und Rum "for the tourist…" Schaut man jedoch hinter den Zaun, Mauer & Vorhang, sieht man das wahre Leben. Es gibt oftmals Armut direkt hinter den Touristenhochburgen. Davon will jedoch niemand was wissen, da die Wahrheit weh tut.

Ein anderes Extrem ist der Menschenzoo…

Oder auch: Elendstourismus. Reisebusse stoppen an Slum-Gleisen einer indischen Megalopolis. Zwischen Speckfalten, Sonnenhut und Tennissocken summen die Kameras. - Kinder steigen abgemagert aus dem Fluss, betteln um Geld und die Touristen steigen Abends vollgefressen in das Schwimmbecken am Hilton. Auch nicht erwuenschenswert. Vorher sollte man sich immer ueber das Land informieren. Die Loesung ist vielleicht individuelles, laengeres Reisen mit Respekt an die Kultur in der man sich aufhaelt. Nicht zu verwechseln mit "Backpacking", das oft, negativ belegt, bedeutet moeglichst viele Laender, moeglichst billig zu bereisen.

Von der Durchreise zum Burnout Syndrom.

Wer zuviele, stressige Trips macht, kann gar nicht mehr alles verarbeiten. Dadurch geht man an dem normalen Leben sicher vorbei. Ok, zugegebenermassen freut sich die Kamera und der Geldbeutel. Mit etwas Glueck wird vielleicht immerhin das eigene Weltbild auf den Kopf gestellt. Reisen in Entwicklungslaendern ist bspw. definitiv eine neue Erfahrung fuer WestEuropaer, Amis und Aussies. Trotz alledem waere es besser, wenn man versucht in die Kultur laengere Zeit einzutauchen um wirklich ein Urteil zu bilden. Wie gesagt, 3 Wochen Europa mag aus japanischer Sicht beeindruckender klingen als 1 Jahr Simbambwe Brunnenprojekt. Aber hier haben wir eben wieder die Unterschiede in den Werten. Wenn mir ein Chinese erzaehlt was an seinem Urlaub das tollste war, werde ich sprachlos. Klimaanlagen, Bett, Essen, Konsum und Shopping sind da ganz oben. Ich will dies ja nicht runterreden, aber wenn man gar nichts von Land & Leute mitbekommt, dann frage ich mich, wieso diese Leute ueberhaupt in den Flieger steigen. Ich verehre beim reisen Materialen!? Was ist da bitte der Sinn dahinter? Einkaufen kann ich auch in Deutschland! Ich frage mich welche Bevoelkerungsgruppe bei solch einer Einstellung verliert…Der 4 Seasons Manager jedenfalls nicht! Der verdient sich ja ne goldene Nase mit dem prallen Geldbeutel der Pauschalurlauber.

Eine Win-Win Situation entseht, wenn beide Seiten profitieren. Sowohl ich als Reisender, als auch die lokalen Bewohner. Das Hotelpersonal, sowie Haendler bezeichne ich nicht als lokale Bewohner, da sie mit dem Tourismus zu tun haben und oft sogar von Nachbarinseln anreisen um fuer Geld alles zu machen. Das traurige ist oft, dass genau diese Gruppe oft skurpellos und eiskalt Weisshauete diskriminiert, generalisiert und nur als eines sieht: Fette Geldesel mit Dollarzeichen in den Augen. Die Touristen wiederum fuehelen sich ausgenommen wie eine Weihnachtsgans und hassen die Leuten denen sie begegnen. Sind dies dann nur Tourismus-Angestellte entsteht eher eine Lose-Lose Situation.

Genau deswegen sollte man die lokale Bevoelkerung kennenlernen, die nichts mit dem Tourismus zu tun hat. Diese sind naemlich nicht angereist um fuer Geld alles zu machen. Sie sind also nicht von dir abhaengig. Logisch auch. Sie wohnen auch da. Von daher wuerden sie dir auch niemals das Geld aus der Tasche ziehn. Ganz einfach deshalb, weil du ja weisst wo sie wohnen. :-) Ok. Es gleicht Entwicklungshilfe. Doch Brunnen bauen, Lehrer spielen, ueberall unterstuetzen waere ja auch etwas viel verlangt von einem Reisenden. Aber ich muss ja nicht gleich als Weltverbesser durch die Welt gehen. Es kann meiner Meinung nach auch um Kleinigkeiten gehen. Einem Kind einen Kugelschreiber schenken, laecheln, Interesse und Respekt zeigen, etwas zurueckgeben und Gelder nicht an die Reiseagentur abgeben. Vielmehr sollte man verstehen, dass Geld geben respektlos ist. Geld geben ist schlecht, denn es ist:

1. Symptombekaempfung. (Geld kommt, Geld geht) -> Wenn ueberhaupt, dann sollte die Ursache bekaempft werden --> Ungerechtigkeit, Ungleichverteilung etc.

2. Beleidigung fuer viele. I am King - Now you’re my slave. Welcher Local will bitte Untertan sein? Die Leute wollen doch zeigen, dass sie auch ohne fremde Hilfe durchs Leben kommen.

Es geht also um Selbstbestimmung. Ich habe mein Leben in der Hand. Genauso wie ihr. Das muss das Ziel sein. Selbstbestimmung heisst Freiheit. Flexibilitaet ist ein anderes Wort, dass sich in diese Kategorie einreihen laesst. Wo wiederum der Kreis geschlossen werden kann. Denn Reisen muss Freiheit sein. Genauso wie kein Reisen. Weder Stillstand noch Bewegung ist negativ. Beides ist positiv, solange es Flexibilitaet & (Meinungs)freiheit bedeutet.

Ko Phi Phi Ley - Maya Bay. The other day we booked a daytrip to some islands. Amongst others, it included a trip to Maya Bay. This is the little piece of paradise they picked to shoot the movie "The Beach". Unfortunately every single package tourist on planet earth knows that! Thus, no wonder that it felt like Disneyland. Boatloads of tourists came, saw and conquered. It was one sad moment in my life. The place would be picture-perfect. Would be. Unfortunately you struggle hard to shoot 1 picture without grandpa hopping in the frame smiling. It was super annyoing. Anyway. Been there done that. But I am still shocked to learn how keen on the tourist dollar Thailands government must be... Paradise-spoilt! Thank good I have my hidden gems and secrets of places which live up to the hype. Maya Bay is certainly not on the list. At least I learned something, though the hard way.

Like Leo said in the movie "The Beach": Paradise is not a place. It is a feeling, a moment. For me, paradise is more than just the place. It is if people worship nature. If they love the place where they live. If they care about their environment. It is if people there respect you, have harmony, take you as you are, not as a walking wallet, make you smile etc. You will hardly find this at Maya Bay, because crowds there usually dont give a fu**. They just consume, take pictures an go away. Locals may give you that, but unfortunately it is hard to find locals on places like Ko Phi Phi. "Tourist dollars over locals" seems to be the new mindset!

Über Tourismus habe ich mich bereits hier ausgelassen. Eigentlich wollte ich ja nie nach Thailand gehen. Phuket - Pattong - Pattaya - 3 Ps die fuer mich nach Bierbauch, Sextourismus, Drogen & schlechte Party klingen. Trotz alledem war ich jetzt ueber ein verlaengertes WE in Krabi. Mit Ausfluegen zu Ko Phi Phi & Co Das Paradies wird einem auf Postkarten versprochen. Die Erwartungen sind hoch! Wir waren in der Nebensaison dort. Trotz alledem fuehlte ich mich wie in Disneyland. 1000 Koepfe im Wasser 1000 Koepfe am Strand. Leider ist "The Beach" keine 1000 Meter breit. Der Strand ist wirklich wunderschoen, das Wasser tuerkis und kristallklar, die Umgebung atemberaubend. Trotz alledem will man sich nicht wohlfuehlen. Denn selbst in der Nebensaison fuehlte sich Ko Phi Phi & Co so an wie eine Tokyo U-Bahn Station zur Rush hour. Von richtigen "Locals" ist ebenfalls keine Spur. Jeder scheint mit dem Tourismus in Beruehrung zu sein. Doch bei unserer Rollertour haben wir noch das "echte" Thailand entdeckt. Englisch sprach da keiner & die Leute sind freundlich! Genau nach meinem Geschmack! Saufgelage kann ich auch in Deutschland haben? Für was bin ich denn dann hier?

CAUTION - Reading my blog may change your life forever!!! Its up to you :)

Unlearning? - What is this? Actually, this is another word I learned a couple of years ago. Since then I've been internalizing it into my life. My world changed forever. Unlearning is an amazing, rewarding ability, not many people have, because they don’t know about it, haven't learned it yet or simply have "no time" (bad excuse..)

Unlearning means: To leave old mindsets; to update your thoughts, to rethink, to improve, to enjoy life more, to appreciate, it is an essential first step to leave your box!

By the way, this post is also based on a previous post about "Generalizing - putting things in boxes"

Generalizing - Putting things in boxes

Es geht um Schubladendenken, Scheuklappen oder auch Schwarz-Weiß-Denken. Wie immer es man nennen will,… ich halte es fuer doof .

Im Endeffekt sage ich in diesem Beitrag: Die Welt ist nicht immer so einfach, dass man von den/dem Guten und den/dem Boesen sprechen kann.

"Ignorance is expressed through generalizing." - Under more scrutiny, we learn that generalizing is always wrong. <- By saying "always" I generalize also, which means even this sentence is wrong :)

To keep the world simple we have to generalize - "put things in boxes"

Every name, every highlight, every word generalizes and even discriminates. Let's say A is good… does this mean B & C etc.. Are not good???

Let's think in this way for a moment. Then let's look at an example:

"To name a country is complete ignorance, generalizing and discriminating." (Sounds stupid right? But wait…)

Indonesia for example…

Don’t you think it is a little simple & ignorant to take 17000 islands and give them 1 name???

Don’t you think it is too easy to use 1 word for 240 million people?

Don’t you think you put them straight in 1 box doing so?

…

This is why I hate the question "Where are you from?"

--> Does this give you the right to put me in a box straight away? Does this matter? I don’t think so!! Take me as I am!! No matter from which country I am from!!! It is about me as a person! I am not guilty for being born in a certain place! No one ever is!!!

This is exactly why I hate to draw lines between countries, though everyone is doing it all the time… The Germans, the French, the Americans and so on… How often have we heard this!?

It is not the country you are born in, what distinguishes you from one group to another. It would be too easy and undifferentiated! - It would be ignoring the differences generalizing and discriminating the minorities.

The big problem with travelling is, it makes you generalize again! Let's say you go to Bali. Next thing will be: People will say I've already been to "Indonesia". So everthing they've experienced, everything they've seen gets projected to the entire country. Regardless of the fact that Indonesia consists of 17000 thousand islands with hundreds of cultures, languages and different faces. This is what I mean by saying a name, a country or whatever is always ignoring facts and simplifying unbearable diversity.

How to leave the box??? How to find out in which box they put you???

Firstly, you have to realize that they put you in boxes already!! Which means, you may have difficulties being yourself. Because people are already prejudiced, based on the box they put you in! Thus, whatever you will do, say, write or stand for might get lost in misunderstandings!!!

Secondly, travel! --> GO to another country / leave your comfort zone (environment).

--> You will be surprised that you are brandmarked in different ways, depending on where you go to. Whilst travelling, you will realize that you can climb out of your box and enter another box which is more comfortable for you.

However, you may also decide to break free... It's up to you!!! Rethink your life!

Let's draw lines around education! Let's put things in boxes based on their education.

Do you really think a rich doctor in Zimbabwe has anything in commong with the poor street kid in Zimbabwe???

I think a rich doctor in Zimbabwe has more in common with a rich doctor in Norway!

I think it makes more sense to generalize based on education and money.

KL weekend

On Friday, after work I took the bus to Malaysia's capital from Sungei Nibong Bus Station in Penang. It was 32 Ringgit something and took round about 6 hours.

I arrived in KL, Hentian Pudu Raya at half past 12 at night. That place is hell on earth - A bus station full of traffic exhumes, heat, people and dirt. Just horrible.

Other than that, the evening was nice. I went to Planet Hollywood together with Jes to party with Dee, who left for Holland the next day. The 3 of us later went to eat sth by car with more of Dee's friends.

We know Dee from Konstanz. He used to study at our University, but is originally from Malaysia, KL to be exact.

Looking at the Petronas Towers at 4:30, eating Nasi Kandar was quite Ok lah :)

After that I searched for accomodation. I ended up in a very grimy area, close to Bukit Bintang.

The next day was all about relxing (fish spa, massage) together with Jess, window-shopping at Times Square, where they have a large indoor-roller-coaster etc.

Later that day, we met Leo, my study colleague who I used to live with in Indonesia. We had a pool party and went to the Petronas Towers later, to do get some night shots of some of the worlds most famous and beautiful buildings!

Fish Spa means, to put your feet in some water, which is full of fish which are supposed to bite off your (dead) skin. I couldnt stop laughing at first, but in the end it is quite an experience! Beware though, because I heard rumours the fish are just scratching and thus it is apparently not effective... Whatever!! I still like it!

The Petronas Towers

Something surreal at night! Of course I go crazy on things like that! Guess why I booked HongKong already!? Because I love taking night shots of cities... It is just another world!

Thats about it with KL for this time.. But I will be back multiple times. To be honest, because AirAsia's main hub is in KL. So I need to take that Penang-KL bus more frequently I suppose...

Komplizierte Wahrheit

Ab sofort werde ich durch einige Beitraege Licht ins Dunkel bringen und ein paar neue Vokabeln einfuehren.

Mein erstes Wort (das ich erfunden habe :) lautet: Lebensverschwendung

Ich habe diese Vokabel vorher noch nie ausgesprochen und noch nie jemandem gesagt. Das Wort hat sich in meinen eigenen Gedanken gebildet - Ich habe es auch noch niemals jemanden sagen hoeren, geschweige denn es irgendwo gelesen.

Ich definiere es also hiermit nach meinen ganz eigenen Vorstellungen:

Es soll ein negativ belegtes Wort sein, das ironisch, auf gesellschaftliche negative Umstaende hinweist. Worte wie Stress & Zeitverschwendung etc. gibt es schon. Aber Lebensverschwendung ist etwas geanz anderes. Es hat ueberhaupt nichts mit Zeitverschwendung zu tun. Es ist sogart fast das Gegenteil.

Zeitverschwendung impliziert appellhaft: "Du sollst arbeiten, den Tag nutzen und produktiv sein" ("Carpe diem" - Nutze den Tag, mal ins negative Licht gerueckt!)

Zeitverschwendung wird natuerlich niemals im Zusammenhang mit ausruhen verwendet. Es mahnt immer an, sich zu bewegen und sich zu beschaeftigen um alles um sich herum zu vergessen. (Ablenkung = negativ, da man eigene Staerken vergisst und uebersieht wie glucklich man eigentlich bereits ist)

Lebensverschwendung hingegen ist etwas ganz anderes. Es soll explizit darauf hinweisen, dein eigenes Leben zu hinterfragen und zu ueberdenken. Es soll zum Ausdruck bringen: Du lebst nur einmal. Der Appell ist, nutze den Tag oder mache auch mal nichts. Du musst gar nichts tun. Du hast die Entscheidung. Mach was aus deinem Leben (Life is what you make it). DU kannst dein Leben und deine Einstellung immer und ueberall aendern. Nur du erstellst Regeln, falls du willst. DU kannst sogar entscheiden wann dein Leben zu Ende sein soll. Ziehe dein Schafskostuem aus, sei kritisch, sei Vorbild, hinterfrage die "Regeln", hinterfrage das gelaufige "Gut und Schlecht" auch wenn viele Denkmuster tief in dir verankert sind.

Konsum ist ein Beispiel, dass unser Leben verschwenden kann, nicht nur unsere Zeit. Was brauchst du WIRKLICH??? Es ist bereits alles da!!! Freundschaften, Wertschaetzung, liebe, Zufriedenheit" das sind Dinge auf die es ankommt.

Kein Fernseher, Angst vor Terror, Vorurteile, Objekte und (falsche, gesellschaftliche) Werte.

Gewinne dein Leben jetzt zurueck, damit du sagen kannst: "Ich lebe", denn Lebensverschwendung ist der Albtraum in dem viele jetzt schon leben - die Matrix :)

Zu meinen, fuer dich vielleicht "gewagten" oder "schwachsinnigen" Worten einige Exkurse:

Merke: "Gewagt", "schwachsinn" ist alles was nicht mit allgemein angenommen (erfunden, erlogenen) Regeln uebereinstimmt. Tatsaechlich gibt es keine Regeln. Wie kann sich ueberhaupt irgendein Mensch das Recht herausnehmen und irgendeinem anderen Menschen vorschreiben wie er zu leben hat? Wie wagen sie es?

Weil viele Menschen Kritik persoenlich nehmen! Angst vor Kritik. Fehlende innere Ueberzeugung. Kritik vor Angst = Ablenkung. Mitlauefer lernen es vielleicht nie, weg vom verteidigen auf einer anderen Ebene zu denken… Wenn euch jemand kritisiert muesst ihr lachen und Danke sagen!! Kritik ist immer auch positiv - Je nachdem auf welchem Ohr ihr hoert!

Vorteile von Kritik

1. Der Kritiker offenbart seine eigene Meinung! (Selbstoffenbarung erfordert Mut)

2. Der Kritiker will euch vielleicht helfen euch zu verbessern - D.h. er mag euch und will dass ihr lernt, euch weiterbildet und noch besser werdet!

Tatsaechlich geschieht genau dies tag-taeglich, auf der ganzen Welt - um uns herum. Das Thema Religionen lasse ich bewusst aussen vor, da ich nichts kritisieren will. Mein Ziel ist es "Die Gedanken sind frei" in eine andere "Sprache" zu uebersetzen…

In LKW (Langkawi) haben wir einen Minibus gemietet. Dadurch konnten wir ueberall hinfahren. Am zweiten Tag fuhr uns Andreas in den Norden, vorbei an einem Wasserfall. An dem ein oder andren Strand merkt man, dass Thailand nicht mehr weit ist. a die Landschaft der von Krabi schon etwas ähnelt. Nur das Wasser ist bei LKW nicht so klar und blau wie dort.

1 + 7 = 8 ...Es waren also 8 Leute in 1 Auto auf 1 von 99 Inseln von Langkawi.

Das Wochenende war der Wahnsinn. Werdet bloss nicht neidisch, falls ihr denkt ich bin nur am Urlaub machen. Vielmehr: denkt was ihr wollt & was immer auch ihr denkt: Ich werde euch nie vergessen und wuensche euch die Sonne nach Deutschland! Macht was aus D-Land wenn ich wieder zurueck komm… Sorry auch dass ich nie anrufe - aber ich hab einfach keine Zeit :P

Another amazing weekend, more best moments in my life, which I will never forget: A weekend in Langkawi with a lot of trainee friends from Penang. I enjoyed every minute and everything was just perfect. Another proof for me that I don’t need to worship materials to be happy… "All I need is the air I breathe & a place to rest my heeeeaaad" :P

How full of hate can you possibly be that you put all white people in a box??? I cannot believe this!!! Ok, it is good that someone writes something like this, because I think many people have a similar mindset but are afraid or unable to verbalize their words of hatred in such an excellent but scary way! Although I mostly disagree with this comment, I admit I have never ever heard such extreme stereotyping. Being abroad myself, I have to, of course, justify a little bit. You think competition is the only motivation on planet earth? - There's more in life than "competing". You probably think it is all about money. What is making us (people who are abroad) move to another country? According to you, the suckers, the losers, the garbage, who cannot compete in their own country will go abroad? Is this your implication? Is it so easy to work abroad?

Actually you forgot that it takes a little skill to go to another country and work there. First of all there is the English language. I think you forgot that there are other languages than English! Most people on earth have another mother tongue than English, so they have to learn first before they are capable to move. Secondly to fully integrate, advisable if necessary, if one moves permanently to another country, you should be able to speak the country's language and even dialects as well. This also demands some skill learning three languages and adapting to a new culture. Also there is the process of moving itself. You think it is so easy to arrange a visa, find a company who supports you in moving, paying the flight, leaving everything back in your homecountry, taking the risk of entering the unknown.

You think stupid losers who cannot compete in their country are easily able to do all this? I don’t think so! I would even turn it around! Why not saying the ones who cannot compete abroad stay in their own country? Yes I do! Because there are other reasons to go to Indonesia than money! And even if we assume money is the only factor which drives us.. I suppose you are making it very clear, again, that your opinion is:

Based on inferiority complex: successful & smart = England, which means English is the superior language and just better than any other language… which is just wrong. It is nothing but coincidence that English is world language. It is not the easiest and not a simple language. Anyone who claims that, is someone who doesn’t know much about languages!! No language is better than another. It is just different.

Again, you create a picture, where money, profit, intelligence, success are words more related to England than to "countries like Indonesia" . The world is unfortunately more complex than this. Let me turn it around once more: "The very successful, smart lawyer or businessman in England will never move (or go once) to a country like Indonesia .." This is what you are saying. And it is paradox within its own. If one is totally profit-orientated and stays in his apartment in London, Im sorry, but such a person is not smart, because it is just inhumane to spend millions on plasma TVs and pay a 1000 pound of rent on a luxurious apartment from their lawyer salary, while people all over the world are starving. But I have been to both worlds, to both countries and I can tell you Europe is not a better world. I think you will find more love in countries like Indonesa than in your million dollar apartment in London. See, this is the complete opposite of what you were saying.

You were saying England is better, I am looking at a more real, complex & differentiated picture. This is why I dare to say my words are more correct than yours.

Still, in the end I think neither Indonesia nor England is better than the other. It is just different and it is up to ones own to decide where one wants to live, provided he is given the chance… - A big wrongfulness, because English people have, in general, enough money to see the world whilst Indonesian haven't.

Also, you are implicating that you cannot understand how a rich person can move to a country like Indonesia!? Why not? You are very heartless and capitalistic by saying so. Can't you understand there are other things in life than money and success? Think again and you will see that the English world is not better than Indonesia for example. It is just what one is looking for, e.g. experiences, questioning own core-values and beliefs, this happens especially in new countries where you will be given the opportunity to broaden your horizon. Though even some travelers never make it, since they stay too much in-group. As soon as you get in touch with locals, however, you should be able to experience the differences. Furthermore I already met enough people, well, I even have the feeling, that there is a trend in the western world, that one tries to leave the amenities of modern life (for example leave their apartment in London) to discover the streets of a developing country.

But my message remains: Not the whole world is craving for western lifestyle. Maybe the ones who don’t know much about it, say the people from countries like Indonesia, which are far, far away from western lifestyle, they may think or dream of a western world where all problems will be gone - it must be like paradise, right? - My answer is: WRONG! Well, I grew up in a so called 1st world, so I am having my own special mindset, but at least I have lived in other countries also, amongst them Indonesia. So I had the luxury to compare the worlds first-hand. And my conclusion is very human: One is always craving for something far away, very different and unknown to be able to project all his dreams to that paradise.

For Indonesians paradise may be a clichee mountainous, snowy Christmas landscape where money grows on trees.

For Western people paradise may be a sitting in a small boat, sailing from island to island, with palm-fringed-white-sand beaches, drinking cocktails listening to the ocean on a hot day..

I hope opening up from the bottom of one's heart, sharing real thoughts, leaving the system, thinking outside of the box, breaking rules of social behaviour and being politically incorrect will be still rewarded nowadays… :) So bless me with your comments, dear readers!

Why do Malay people try to be so modern!? I am still wondering on a daily basis. I speak the Malay language, earn hardly any respect *cry* and get English answers - Of course lah, I already had this discussion many times, also in Malay :) and it all comes down to these facts:

- Why do you use the language of the poor (like Indonesia), you are rich man!! So use English!!

- White people are considered English speaking

(This is certainly true for 80%, but not all white people's mother tongue is English… And what if someone tries to learn Malay??? Bad news if you're white! Discrimination will await you.. You will get locked in a box ! - Since I am one of the 0,00 something % of white people who speak Malay and German, this is maybe just me asking these questions of language.. Most people will stick to English anyway. But this is my personal blog…So I write whatever I like, I am simply glad if anyone out there is also interested in never-discussed-topics like this one!!)

Once upon a time I couldn't get how one can trade cultures, values…well, even the languages for a western life!? This person has to think Western life is the best, right?

I mean some people give up everthing just to become like us. Trying to get white… (Cremes) and trying to be rich (money makes you a bad person - everyone knows but still everone tries to get rich from the bottom of their evil side)

I, being a western traveller, go to places like Sarawak, Borneo to find humanity, traditions and another way of thinking. But once we find out that people there lose their own cultures and in turn become more and more like us, we are very surprised! Because we left Germany for a different life, because we consider western lifestyle not superior to any other lifestyle. I even think that Western lifestyle becomes inferior to traditional life.

Everyone is always talking about progress, development, prosperity, wealth, health and standard of living… we even get good feelings hearing the sounds of these lovely words.

It is because these words are positively connotated and deap-seated in our western mindsets.

We are blinded! - Everyone seems to be pursuing a life together with their healthy, rich and modern family. Everyone seems to be looking more and more in-group, deeper and deeper… They forget that focussing too much on ones own makes you forget about all the others out there.

Of course I also understand the circle model: I am #1, family #2, relatives #3, the place #4, the country #5 and the rest of the world #10000.

But this is in fact a problem… No one seems to give a shit about others, if he doesn't need others to survive, that is..

"I don’t need you, so why should I care about you. There's not even a reason to be friendly since I don’t have to care, laugh, smile or to suck up to anyone… I already have enough progress, development, prosperity, wealth, health and standard of living. So how dare you even talking to me??? Fuck off, do it yourself and go back where you came from!!!"

In fact this way of thinking started in Western countries and becomes more and more universal! It is considered perfectly acceptable to think like that. However, no one in my life has ever used the language explicitly enough to speak in this way. It is so deeply rooted that we forget about it all too often.

In Indonesia I encountered friendliness… You have the feeling "We like you, we accept you, we even need you" - It makes you feel important… Ok some say they are friendly because they want money from the tourist! - Well, so what!?! How can you possibly think so bad about people anyway?!? I don’t care why someone is smiling, I just care that he is smiling! A smile with bad thoughts behind looks still better than good thoughts covered by an angry face!

In fact: The best way to show someone your teeth is to smile! Which means: If you feel anger, smile it away! This is what I call positive thinking in its very essence!!!

A lot of old, traditional and cultural values get exchanged or lost in modern society. Like traditions, respect, harmony, friendliness etc. (Do you also feel the negative and/or ridiculous connotation these words are having nowadays, especially looking at the Western values I mentioned above… :) - One example: New Vs Old…. Which one do you prefer? … :)

Let's have a closer look at traditions, respect, harmony, friendliness etc.

Surprisingly, these are all Asian values (old?), we can hardly find in countries like Germany (new?).

For some of us these are reasons to go to Asia in search of something we don’t have in our own country. Travelling or moving to another country is basically like a reality check. How will your dreams hold up against the truth!? Suddenly we learn that Asia's youth and next generation will be like us! What a shock!!!

I almost cry, seeing Asia moving in this direction, I like and appreciate them so much more if they safe their own cultural identity. I love them like they are. I do not like them anymore if they try to copy me! If you are like me, why should you suddenly be better than before!? Please do your own thing, Malaysia!

But then I found we have something in common already! Going to your country, starting to like some of the things you do and even adopting habits, since I like some of them more than the ones of my own culture. I want to go away, you want to go away. Same motivation.

Let's look at something I appreciate a lot whilst living in Asia.

RESPECT

Respect is very important to Asians to safe face and harmony. To Germans not anymore. Everyone is the same in Germany. This is the essence of democracy, isnt it? Everyone should have the same right and chances, correct?

If one sits on the table with people of different status and backgrounds and whatnot, it is considered best if each individual can open up and talk directly to one another.

In Asia, however, there are some rules. Especially the concepts of age and status become invisible lines you must consider and not cross! This is what I mean by showing respect!

And I just love this Asian value. Because if you show more respect to an old person for example, your self-respect will be higher also! Thus it is a Win-Win situation, both parties will benefit! The one showing respect and the one being respected.

The same goes for smile. Indonesians for example always smile. Even if they hate you, actually I do the same sometimes. Never show anger! If you smile, you will immediately feel better, down to your heart. And the other person seeing you smiling will also feel better. So, it is again a Win-Win situation.

In Germany it is mostly a lose-lose situation concerning this matter. Since we, Germans, attach so much importance to the concept of truth, we would never smile if we would not mean it. However, I think: feel free to break this "rule"!

What's very interesting, however, is that I like both values. German bluntness and Asian harmony.

Maybe the two cannot work together. They may be like + and -. They are like moon and sun - They cannot coexist.

If you always win (smile), respect (be in harmony) and be happy how can you progress??? Why should you change if everything is perfect and you're already satisfied? Where's the motivation to improve things if you accept everthing like it is?? I consider this as the essence of the traditional Asian values which I could still find in Indonesia.

The German (modern) mindset, however, traded most of these values for progress… It is obvious: If you always create win-lose situations like competitions, people will always complain, improve, be angry and never satisfied, be direct and opened (criticise bluntly) etc.

Germany gives everyone a right to talk and worship equality (democracy) and materials (cars!) the result will be this: Continuous motivation to reach the sky. Glorifying progress, improvement and effort.

To me, being German, I have to admit honestly that these words sound very nice also. But living life with these objectives will take away your smile, respect and satisfaction. Because it is the exact opposite of these, what shapes German values! (see above)

14/14 Borneo - Reality Check

My motivation and objectives for this trip were the following:

I tried to get away from it all. Leave the traffic of Penang behind and search for adventure, Malay or Tribal culture, Nature, wildlife and Indonesian-like friendliness and culture shocks ;)

Well…. I found some of those but most things surprised me and I got disappointed. If I am honest I was probalbly looking for a bit of Indonesia in Sarawak. Unfortunately I haven't found this. Sarawak is a blend of cultures, very modern, very rich, very touristy and very clean. None of these applies for Indonesia - NONE…

At one point, when I made my mind up, I recognised these differences, I could also unlearn and rethink, which is definetely necessary to enjoy a place. It is never good to live in a dream world (here: to find a bit of Indonesia) and then to discover there is nothing like that… How can you enjoy the good stuff Sarawak can offer you???

I think you have to accept it as it is and enjoy the place and holiday with a clear and clean mind.

This is what I did and in the end I really enjoyed the place. Abdou, another trainee was coming over also and we had a great time doing some cultural stuff, meeting both travellers and local people who were really friendly etc.

The good:

Upsides were, again: the nature (not too much oil palms), Malay kampungs & people. I like opened discussions with no borders. One insightful example was a discussion we had at Bako National Park. Together with another German, Maik and the owner of the Park we talked till the break of dawn. It was very interesting for me to learn about the way Malaysians think. For example he said, he is hard working and trying to become like us, the Westerners, in order to enable his kids travelling, just like we do!

The single most impressive natural thing I've experienced must have been the Hornbill flying around me!! It was so incredible to hear his wings flapping. The sound is absolutely stunning. I cant explain it, but it was like what I imagine a Pteranodon must have sounded like!!!

The bad:

I liked the south, around Kuching better than the north. Mulu Nationalpark, near Miri in the North, close to Brunei is very touristy. It is overpriced and the government tries to get rid of the backpacking scene and everything is super-safe and boring. Ok the caves, the jungle and scenery are great, but I could not really enjoy it due to the mentioned reasons. Therefore I also blame Lonely Planet again. First they didn’t send me the books, although I paid, secondly what they are writing about Borneo, particularly Mulu is just ridiculously wrong! For example the canopy walk…"easily the best in SEA" - is just untrue… it was a waste of money - 30 Ringgit = 6 Euro for wasting my time? C'mon!! Next lie was about the caves… Ok they are "awesome" but if the Malaysian governemnt, again, forces you to join a guide and thus a group, I cannot really enjoy it when hordes of package tourists, aged 50-70 walk and talk in front of you!

The accomodation also is another issue… The book says 20 Ringgit a night - but in fact you pay 37 Ringgit!!!! How come they suddenly double the rate???

Also the Mulu café, in which you are forced to go, is totally overpriced and serves tasty, but tiny, little meals. Even the cheapest water is 6 Ringgit, which is more than a Euro. If Germans read this, they might wonder whats so expensive about 1 Euro something. But… you have to understand my situation. First of all I am not calculating back to Euro, because it is just plain stupid, living in Asia. My (tiny) salary is in Ringgit, everything is in Ringgit, so I think in Ringgit. And when you're in Penang, which is also quite touristy, you pay 80 Sen (16 Euro cent) for food (Roti Canai) and suddenly you are in Sarawak, where you hought it is not as touristy as Penang, because no one is ever mentioning it, you suddenly have to pay at least 10 Ringgit = 1000 Sen for the cheapest food… (Satay with white rice) you start wondering don't you? I mean it is OK to have expensive prices on tourist places.. But if you are absolutely NOT given ANY chance to choose your food, you are just pissed off, especially when you're trying to stay on a budget. Mulu is no real place, it has no locals, it is just protected, overrated and there for the well-off tourist… This is what they should write about it. Why making secrets? I cant and don’t want to understand this!!!

The Ugly:

I would definetely go again, but would avoid tourist places like Mulu, which may be really beautiful, but totally spoiled by the tourist-blood-sucking government!

I realize once again how amazing Indonesia is: The people are super friendly almost everwhere and they do not give a damn about tourists…(bad news for Hilton-package-Tourists but perfect for backpackers like me) They also have a normal life in which you may integrate if you choose to. Of course you may stay at Hilton in Bali, but you may also hang around with the locals. (Which was surprisingly difficult in Sarawak..where you are almost forced by fines to stay ON the beaten track.)

Well, in Sarawak I tried to get off the beaten track, but I couldn’t manage it!?! I mean I went offroad - yes - but maybe I didn’t - at least I found nothing there. Indonesia was full of treasures… even on Bali (which is, together with Jakarta, the Indo-devil), you go offroad and you will be rewarded soooo much.

You go offroad in Sarawak (I went to Kapit), and your personal nightmare will start. I found the most ugly and unfriendly city Ive ever seen in my life. (I claim: thanks to Chinese smuggling)

Maybe I was just unlucky. But still, walking the streets I felt extremely uncomfortable, scared, not accepted and the whole atmosphere there was just horrible… Ok, maybe it was just me, but I still think Kapit can be used just for one thing, to shoot Horror-Movies with Zombies… You don’t even have to change a thing :) :) (sorry Kapit)

Taking the local bus, together with Maik, a German from the hostel, to Bako National Park.

Kids again!

The park was really nice and people were friendly! A lot of wildlife and nature! Also, the owner was really nice and I head so many good conversations with the people that it was sooo worth it going there. I really liked it - very good value and not touristy!

2 things were bad though...

1. I ve never been bitten by so many mosquitoes, ever

2. I ve never had such extreme humidity ... 150% ???

Lets leave Kapit for Kuching in the south of Sarawak… As soon as you cross the river from Rich to Poor, from Ugly to Beautiful from Chinese to Malay… you start liking Kuching. Incredible Malay hospitality and nice travellers in the hostel + laid back atmosphere, cheap and beautiful National Parks (3 Ringgit to see Orang Utans!) and a beautiful city all formed the highlight of my trip. In Pako National Park I had such a nice and deep conversation with a local Malay about the economy, tourism, minorities, my own country, poverty, wrongfulness and so on! Conversations like this… which I also had with other travellers around Kuching, where also the highlight of my trip! Some people were from "exotic" countries like Pakistan, Russia, India, USA, Belgium, Spain, Germany ;) and France ;) and I really enjoyed talking to these people, because I think it is extremely rewarding to get to know nice people from countries, you may have a wrong stereotype / picture in mind. These discussions with the people changed my mind about those countries again! I was really surprised, because media often tries to paint a wrong picture of some cultures, just to manipulate you!!

7/14 Miri to Sibu & Kapit

Since I couldn't cope with Mulu's rip-off-prices I bussed it down to Sibu - Kapit (right hand side off Sibu on the map).

I was looking for an authentic longhouse-invitation. I dont like the tourist thing, thus I was asking around in town. Sadly I ended up getting nothing. Kapit is the most "chinese"-place I have ever seen (since I havent been to China yet). Also, it was dirty, unfriendly, ugly and there was nothing. I was the only white person for miles around.. And people let me feel it!! I felt extremely uncomfortable and "not welcomed"... Because of that I left the place 1 day later - Im sorry Kapit - I had low expectations anyway... But still.. If you go inland you expect more traditional-Malay things.. and not even more China in Malaysia

6/14 Climbing to "the Pinnacles"

It was super-strenuous, but then...we could see the whole jungle until Brunei!! Some parts were so steep we had to use ladders.. And we had to walk on very dangerous parts...across narrow branches and pinnacles... Why am I doing this again?

Since it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to take pictures in caves, it is, as always, better to experience these caves in real life. However, I think you can also go to Niah Caves, because they are supposed to be also very nice and much cheaper and not so touristy as Mulu National Park.

2/14 Miri - Mulu National Park

You have to fly MAS to reach Mulu. I stayed there 4 nights and saw, what they call the largest and some of the most beautiful caves on earth. Also there is primary rainforest and mountains - Which were indeed beautiful. Also rivers are an important feature of Sarawak, Borneo.

On the same day I did a lot of things: The canopy walk for example.

Sadly it was a little disappointing. It had ZERO wildlife and was totally overpriced. Also I was mad at Lonely Planet. They didnt send me my books about Borneo I ordered (though they took the money) and these guys are writing the canopy walk is "easily the best in South East Asia"...

Should this be true..I am deeply disappointed by canopy walks.. Ok I didnt expect orang utans and birds swinging and flying through the air.. But still C'mon - you expect some fun dont you? Total boredom is not what I paid for! Ok at least the jungle sounds made up for it.. (a little)

1/14 KL - Kuala Lumpur

Since AirAsia has its main hub in Kuala Lumpur, I had to take a bus to reach the capital of Malaysia. Arriving at night, my first goal was to see the Petronas Towers - One of the most beautiful and famous buldings on earth.

Most of my pictures turned out to be a little crappy. I think it is because I was really exhausted. The bus from Sungai Nibong in Penang to KL is ok lah. BUT... It is, like most long distance busses, freezing cold inside. I almost got sick and couldn't sleep.

I arrived in KL around 5 o clock in the morning. I was happy to leave the fridge!! Thank god I'm in the tropics! Outside is much better - No wonder life in South East Asia happens outside, compared to most 4 season countries spending more time inside of buildngs. However this is about to change already - Since Malaysians love Western life style too much. Which means they spend more time in their air conditioned cars, offices, rooms, sitting in front of the computer etc.

Anyway, I was a little disappointed by KL. It is not a nice city I think. I don't know why, but I felt lack of character.

Also the lights at the Petronas Towers were off when I arrived, although it was pitchblack-dark.

I didnt know they turn it off. Because all pictures I've seen so far had the Petronas bright like stars! Well at least the sunrise was still Ok lah.

Borneo

The Taxi Iraq took us to QE2 club in Penang. What an amazing evening!!! Probably the best Taxi in the world drives around in Penang.

It is super fast, cheap and the driver, who is from Iraq, plays middle eastern party music or hiphop - very loud!

Felix, Jes & me had so much fun dancing, laughing and screaming, while sitting on the back seat with 120 km/h that we called this guy over and over again!

Everytime he arrived (even at 3 o clock at night), he picked us up and already sets the right tune, opens the doors and the party can begin.

A friend from Germany, I went to school with, came over for 2 weeks. I hope (and think) he had a lot of fun. First of all, I had to prove, that Penang is the place to be, when you're talking about food.

First off was the Tandoori Chicken, with Naan Biasa. This dish alone makes many people forget about most things they've ever had. They have to rethink "How good food can taste" after having it. Using the right hand was no problem for Felix. Being very experimental he enjoyed other food, like the spicy Rendang - An Indonesian favourite in Penang style- Indian curry influenced served with pineapple, cucumber and a lot of exotic spices.

Being situated close to the equator has certainly advantages. Especially for fruits. They are cheap, more fresh, more diverse and more exotic than the stuff they sell in Germany. This is way Felix had the idea to buy fruits all the time and make cocktails..

I am fine with it! What can I say. It was delicious. I think everyone will agree,

Felix also had the brilliant idea to throw a party in my apartment, or in OUR apartment. I have a new roomate, called Timo, for 4 weeks now. At least I was, again, fine with the idea of throwing a party. I hope Timo was also fine ;)

Penang - What's up?

The other day it rained in torrents. At night the whole island was underwater :) It was actually not funny for some people living on ground level. It got wet in their homes, since water entered the houses. You cannot capture the rain on night shots. You should see my videos instead.

Another day at Bukit Jambul - A Malay shopping mall. It reminds me of the Indonesian- shopping - cheapies. BJ, how they call Bukit Jambul, is just as packed out, full of people (almost exclusively Malay), cheap stuff, fake stuff etc.

Outside you will find more people, food and traffic, as well as dirty buldings, like the one above (right hand side)

Dear Readers!

The last weeks were amazing. A lot of things happened in my life. These are all reasons why I posted nothing recently. I have been just too busy with reality to write something here or go online.

But at the moment I have evermore pictures to skip through and things urgently want to be written down, here in this blog.

What happened?

Well, over the last two weeks I swapped my office with bus, boat and airplane seats. AirConditioning was replaced by 100% humidity and sun. My blood has been taken a million times (Mosquitoes). I had, as always when travelling, amazing conversations with amazing people (which is always the highlight after every journey). I climbed difficult mountains, hiked through rainforrest, swam through rivers with mountain backdrops, ate almost exclusively Chinese food (no choice), spend sometimes a lot, sometimes almost no money, saw lots of rain, dirty cities, surprisingly good infrastructue and rich people, bad poeple, good people, amazing Malay hospitality, where I also had delicious food and so on.

All this happened in Malaysian Borneo: Sarawak, to be exact.

This may sound like things enough to fill a story book. You're right, but nevertheless: Before all that, even more amazing things happened which are all well worth writing home about.

I had a friend (Felix) from Germany coming over. We had a great time. Although I had to work I somehow managed to party, do sightseeing and so on.

Also I would like to tell you more about Penang, Georgetown the capital, friends and the everyday life.

Mal ein unangenehmes Thema, dass weniger mit Urlaub zu tun hat: Mosquitos.

Wenn sie schwarz-weiß gestreift sind, heisst es Dengue-Fieber-Alarm...

Mein Apartment mag alles haben, aber Luft und Wind ist leider Mangelware. Ohne Klimaanlage geht mal gar nichts. genau in solchen Bedingungen, also in meinen vier Waenden, fuehlen sich die kleinen Vampire pudelwohl..

Ich werde taeglich von den Teilen verstochen. Die schwarz-weissen lieben mich ganz besonders. Wenn mich bloß alle so lieb haben wuerden wie Mosquitoes...

Singapore

Für ein paar Tage nach Singapur, um meine Family zu besuchen, die dann weiter nach Bali fliegen.

Ich war 2005 schonmal dort, aber mir kam trotzdem alles ganz neu vor. Über die letzten drei Jahre hat sich die Stadt stark verändert. Alles ist größer, teurer, überfüllter, moderner etc.

Zum Glück blieb manches unverändert: Das Essen, die gute Infrastruktur, die Sauberkeit, die Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, die Vielfalt, der Komfort.

Wobei auch diese Punkte nochmal extremer geworden sind. Hinzu gekommen sind auch etliche neue Wolkenkratzer und Baustellen. Total verrückt: Es stehen überall Kräne. Meiner Meinung nach ist Singapur jetzt nochmal ein Stück mehr "Weltstadt" geworden.

Going to Singapore, to see my family, who'll move on to Bali afterwards. I've already been there 2005 but I was amazed. Everything was new for me again since the city changed enormously over the last 3 years. Everything got bigger, expensive, crowded and more modern.

Luckily some things stayed untouched: The food, the good infrastructure, the cleanliness, the shopping, the diversity, the comfort.

However even these points turned more extreme. Also, there are a lot more highrise buldings and construction sites now. Totally crazy: There are cranes everywhere. If you ask me, Singapore changed towards a "World City" a bit more.

Let's go! Slowly start the journey in Frankfurt, Germany & go overland to Slovenia. There you can say "Hello" to Graf Dracula & enjoy the nature with its nice people. At least that's what I believe.

After that, we move on to Greece. I don't mention any particular highlights there, since I trust it's the people that make this country. Apart from that I expect Europe's finest beaches & lots of history with some famous artifacts.

I also like the simple but nice Greek food & wine. So I think you can have a good time there.

I guess it is nice to leave Europe overland. What better place than a city, where Europe meets Asia? Istanbul is the place. Also, talking about people, Turkey is apparently another country where everyone is warm-hearted. Many Internet-sites name Turkey as the best country to travel in. Very rewarding, it is diverse and the east is supposed to be beautiful. Other highlights would include Pamukkale (see pic), Nemrut Dag for the stone heads, Cappadocia & of course Hagia Sophia, the mother of churches.

Arriving overland in massive China, I would have no idea where to start. I don't know much about this country, but the south sounds appealing to me.

Another thing "I have to see before I die" is quite definetely Hong Kong. I would even say it is #1 on my list at the moment. Being a huge fan of the movie "Blade Runner" I really need to see this amazing metropolis. Actually I hope I get lost in this chaos. A real adventure has to be scary, grimy & dangerous :)

Being a city-lover, it's a shame I have not yet been to Shanghai. This megacity is even more futuristic (traditional?) & ever-changing.

Once in this difficult-to-reach country, I would also try to see the opposite of this concrete & neon jungle - Mountains. Luckily Japan has also just these, plus rich culture & the best food I can imagine. Since this country is killing my budget I would rush trough it as quick as possible though...

Since I like extremes, I also like contrasts. Departing Tokyo there is a high chance of a culture shock by entering Mexico - simply because it is totally different.

Once there, i expect Latin culture, siesta, nice beaches & monuments, like the Teotihuacan pyramids.

Guess why I want to learn Spanish. It is because of countries like Colombia. I want to go there to bust a myth: Colombia is a no-go. I don't think so, actually I heard it has very nice people and caribean-style culture. Everyone is in a good mood and likes to party, hang out & the women are stunningly beautiful there. I don't know why so many people don't want to visit this country. Just because of Scarface I guess :)
